On my way to the big city to a friend’s wedding, I saw Judy on the road ahead of me. She was on her way to work and had her ll-year-old granddaugher on the back of her scooter. Judy may be five feet tall, at best; her mother deserted her when Judy was 12 years old. Judy tried to make it by dropping out of 8th grade and babysitting.

She saved enough money to buy a plane ticket to Anchorage, where she knew her mother had "relocated". I asked Judy, "How could a 12-year-old arrive in Anchorage and find her mother?" To which she replied, "I just went to every bar I could find until I found her."

Judy married at 14 to an older man (in his 20’s) and had a baby. She was abused and left him and married again and had another little girl. She lived in a small cabin with no utilities, working two jobs and basically being raised by kind barmaids and bartenders.

Judy never looked back, she taught herself to read with instruction manuals (the first was for a sewing machine she bought). Eventually, Judy found love and has been happily married to a wonderful man and has adopted his family as hers.

Judy, through all the hard times and struggles, has carved out a comfortable life for herself, and her daughters are leading strong, happy lives.

Even though Judy is short on whiners’ sympathy, she does have a huge heart of gold for those who truly need it.

I started this faux patchwork quilt last year and was quickly interrupted by a broken bobbin casing. Once the casing was fixed, I no longer felt like working on it. I picked it up in the summer, but managed to break the bobbin casing again. Instead of forking out the money for another repair bill, we bought a new sewing machine a few months later. I had saved up several small projects to work on, so again the quilt got pushed aside. I finally got back into it today and am almost completely finished. The best part about sewing a quilt in the winter – it keeps you warm as you work!

I also broke my camera lens so the next week or so of 365 will be shot on a point and shoot.
